What are the Global Humanitarian Engineering Awards?

The Global Humanitarian Engineering Awards are an Awards open to anyone working in the field of humanitarian engineering, anywhere. Their objectives are:


  • To recognise outstanding achievements in humanitarian engineering

  • Showcase and celebrate humanitarian engineering progress

  • Provide role models in the field

  • Demonstrate less popularly known roles of engineering in society

  • Provide incentives for excellence


How is humanitarian engineering defined?

Humanitarian engineering is defined as the application of engineering expertise for communities in circumstances of need, including disaster relief, poverty alleviation and disability access.


Who can apply?

Anyone may apply for the Humanitarian Engineer of the Year Award, no formal qualification in engineering is required. A nominator may also apply on behalf of, or for, a nominee. Nominations will be accepted from any project or program for the Humanitarian Engineering Project of the Year Award.


When will the 2013 Awards be open for entries?

The 2013 Awards will open for entries on May 1st 2013.


When will they close?

The 2013 Awards nominations will close on June 2nd 2013


How are the awards decided?

There will be two rounds of judging. The judging panel and criteria is described on the Judging page.


When will the Awards be Presented?

The 2013 Global Humanitarian Engineering Awards will be presented at the Global Humanitarian Technology Conference on October 20-23 2013 in Silicon Valley. Time and day TBA.


What supporting documentation is required for the application?

No supporting documentation is required, however a resume or Curriculum Vitae can be attached to the Humanitarian Engineer of the Year Nomination.


What do we receive if we win an award? Will there be a prize?

We are currently searching for sponsors to fund prizes for the Award winners.


Is there any cost for entering the Awards?

No, entering the Global Humanitarian Engineering Awards is free to enter.


Which languages will nominations be accepted in?

Nominations will preferably be written in English, however, if you wish to receive the questions or make a nomination in another language please email humanitarianengineeringawards@gmail.com and we will do our best to find translation services for your nomination.


What are “global regions”?

The global regions are: Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, North America, South America.

A finalist from each global region will be selected; for Humanitarian Engineer of the Year, the region will be based on the nominee’s country of residence. For Humanitarian Project of the Year, the global region will be defined by the country in which the project/program was carried out, for projects/programs which have expanded across countries, the country of origin of the project/program will be used. 


How long will it take to write the nomination?

Each nomination consists of the following questions, these can be saved at any point during the nomination. For poor internet connections we recommend copying these into a word processing document and copy/pasting the answers into the online nomination form.
