GHTC 2022 Student Poster Competition Guidelines

GHTC 2022 invites undergraduate students to submit abstracts for the Student Poster Competition. Download flyer (PDF)
Students are invited to send in ideas or designs for developing projects/products supporting the Key focus areas of GHTC 2022 which include (but are not limited to):
- Affordable & Clean Energy (SDG7): Generation, and Distribution of Renewable Energy; Off-grid Energy for Lighting, Cooking and Heating.
- Agriculture & Food Security (SDG2): Agricultural Technologies, Irrigation and Farming Practices.
- Clean Water & Sanitation (SDG6): Clean Water; Sanitation; Solid Waste Management; Disease Vector Control; Drainage and Hygiene.
- Connectivity & Communication in Support of Development: Communication and Information Technologies, Systems, and Applications; Social Media and Its Application;
- Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG8): Entrepreneurship Programs (including social entrepreneurship), Sustainable Business Models, Social Enterprises, Workforce Development Programs (e.g. digital literacy programs), Innovative Business Financing Models.
- Disaster Mitigation, Preparedness, Response & Recovery: Disaster Planning and Preparedness; Predictive, Warning and Response Systems; Community Mobilization; Monitoring and Evaluation of Community Response.
- Good Health and Well Being (SDG3): Medical technology, Telemedicine, Mobile Clinics, Primary Care and Nutrition.
- Quality Education (SDG4): Training and Capacity Building; Programs; Methods and Service Learning.
- Technologies that promote gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls (SDG5)
- Technology Impacts on Societal Evolution: Societal implications of technology introduction, implementation challenges for sustainable technologies, ethics and professional responsibility, risk management, public policy considerations.
- Other Related United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (e.g. SDGs 9, 11, 12, 14): Humanitarian Challenges & Opportunities; Infrastructure, Information, and Human Security; Shelters; Community engagement, Capacity-building, and Behavior Change; Metrics and measurement; Technology Design, Adoption and Dissemination; Human-Centered System Design; Ocean Health and Climate Change Mitigation.
The selected posters will be presented during the GHTC 2022 Student Poster Competition, on Thursday, September 8 during GHTC 2022 (September 8-11), starting at 4:00 pm PT. Online presentation can be arranged.
The deadline to submit poster abstracts is midnight US Pacific Time, August 20, 2022.
Notification of acceptance will be sent out a week after the original deadline and next day after any extended deadline.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
- Poster authors must be undergraduate students at the time of submission and may be members of a team comprising of up to four students.
- At least one student author must be an IEEE student member at the time of the submission of the poster to the Contest.
- The poster should be fully the work of the student(s) and completed before they have received their respective engineering or scientific degree.
HOW TO SUBMIT?
To participate in the Competition students should write a 400-500-word description (abstract) of the poster, along with authors names, respective university and contact details; and submit in PDF using the form below.
The abstracts will be reviewed and authors notified about the acceptance of their poster by August 28th. If you have any questions or problems submitting your abstract, please contact: Prof. Mostafa Mortezaie, at mortezaie@ieee.org
After the abstract is accepted, contestants will need to register for the contest at the link provided and prepare a poster of no larger than 48 x 36 inches in PDF and for remote participants, an up-to-10-minute recorded presentation in MP4.

PRIZES
Cash prizes will be awarded as follows:
1st Place Award-$750
2nd Place Award-$500
3rd Place Award-$250
Information on the winners will be posted on the GHTC and IEEE Region 6 websites.
RULES REGARDING SUBMISSIONS
1. Poster authors must be undergraduate students at the time of submission and may be members of a team comprising of up to four students.
2. At least one student author must be an IEEE student member at the time of the submission of the poster to the Contest.
3. The poster should be fully the work of the student(s) and completed before they have received their engineering or scientific degree.
4. The poster abstract should not be previously published or presented at another conference which has assigned copyright. If any plagiarism or copyright issues are found for the abstract, it will not be accepted.
5. Poster abstracts must be submitted by the deadline. Abstracts submitted afterward will not be considered for evaluation.
6. Students from countries embargoed by the US Government are not eligible for prizes.
7. The organizing/review committee of the GHTC Student Poster Competition reserves the right to accept or reject any abstract without assigning any reason.
8. For accepted posters, the authors, affiliations, title of the poster and the abstract will be posted on the GHTC website in advance of the contest.
POSTER SPECIFICATIONS
1. Posters must be in PDF no larger than 36”x48” if printed and no larger than 10 MB
2. Posters (PDF) will be uploaded to location TBD in advance of the presentation
3. Remote poster presentations will be recorded as MP4 and uploaded in advance. See Guidelines for virtual presentation recording.
POSTER SESSION SCHEDULE AND SET UP FOR CONTESTANTS
1. At least one of the authoring students must be present at the GHTC Student Poster Competition.
2. The poster session is Thursday, September 8 and starts at 4:30 pm and ends by 7:00 pm PT.
3. Teams will make a 10 minute presentation on their poster, in person, by recording or online live, using either the poster or by separate PPT presentation, followed by 5 minutes for live questions by the judges and audience.
4. Judging will occur after the session is over and results will be announced by email and posted on the website.
5. If selected as one of the winning posters, you will be contacted to fill out the appropriate US IRS tax form after which you will receive your prize. (Students from countries embargoed by the US Government are not eligible for prize money.)
6. The GHTC will feature prize posters on the website.
REGISTRATION FEE
After the poster is accepted, contestants must register at the site which will be provided. Registration is not required to submit an abstract. (Poster registration is separate from GHTC and does not cover attendance at GHTC.)
Registration fee is $50 per poster (at least one student has to be an IEEE student member – see https://www.ieee.org/join).
Additional students may participate as the audience for no additional fee.
